   Following her accident in 1925, Frida Kahlo had to spend long periods in bed. In an attempt to find a distraction, which would make her convalescence more bearable, Frida’s mother gave her a box of paints and a portable easel. Frida began making portraits and drawings of the people close to her. One of the first portraits she did was that of Alicia Galant, a friend who lived nearby in Coyoacán.Frida painted her in an interior setting, seated bolt upright on a chair. This stylized pose recalls the works of Sandro Botticelli, which were among Frida’s favorites and constituted her nearest artistic reference. Dark colors and tones predominate in the portrait, making it difficult to determine where the internal space ends and the external one begins. The light in the portrait emanates from the face of the subject, who turns her gaze away from the viewer. Through an invisible window we see a nocturnal landscape in which the young painter placed vegetation and two stars in the sky.The painting must have pleased its creator, because she decided to add an inscription on the back with which she acknowledges herself as an artist: “My first work of art, Frida Kahlo 1927.”
